Ron Moore, Former NBA Championship Winner to Coach Maryland MarvelsPress Release Moore grew up in Brooklyn, NY and began playing basketball at the age of 11. He received a four-year scholarship to West Virginia, where he was All American for three years and All Conference during his senior year. He was the second round, number 2 pick, and 25th player overall when drafted by the Knicks. He spent two seasons with the Detroit Pistons and one season with the Phoenix Suns before going to Europe. Despite the challenges faced growing up in New York, Moore was able to accomplish his goal of playing basketball for the NBA. When asked about his biggest accomplishment, Moore is most pleased with his 10-year professional playing career but most importantly, the hard work and sacrifice he put into playing the game he loves so much and earning his degree. Moore is as excited about the opportunity to coach the Maryland Marvels, as the Marvels organization is to have him on board. His commitment to youth stems from his own childhood experiences and the support of his family, friends and community. When asked what drives his commitment, Moore responded, “I feel that our young people have the ability to do so many positives things, they just need someone who will take the time to show them the way. I feel my experiences and the things I've gone through will get young people to believe they can have success as well.” That connection to the community is an important value to the Maryland Marvels team. "After meeting Mr. Moore for the Head Coach position, it was immediately clear to me that he posses exactly the qualities I envision a coach should be. Not just an ABA coach, but a pure coach. He is more than willing to pass that knowledge of how to be champions that he learned from the late great coach Chuck Daly, to our athletes. All of these qualities are immeasurable and we are honored to have him as our head coach," commented Agbai. Moore says he looks to bring to the team someone who understands what it takes to be able to get to the next level and someone who is very oriented with working with young people. He looks forward to helping someone make it to the NBA or overseas. Having said that, he encourages individuals who are interested in playing for the Maryland Marvels to come to tryouts in good physical condition and not take this level of competition for granted. Moore went on to say, “I want players who are willing to sacrifice their own personal beliefs for the team and the organization. Players who are willing to pay the price for success.” To read the Ron Moore interview in its entirety, and for additional information about upcoming tryouts and the Maryland Marvels, please visit www.marylandmarvels.com or call 410 233 1110. |
